The Clothes That Make It Out of the Wardrobe

There is a category of clothing we create by accident: the piece that feels too good for an ordinary day.

It stays folded. It waits for dinner, a birthday, a room full of people. Then the date passes, and it waits again.

We understand the instinct. A piece that feels considered can seem to ask for a considered occasion. But clothes do not become part of your life by being kept perfectly. They become part of it by being worn.

At Afrotunda, we make small runs. Fewer than forty pieces, and when a run ends, it ends. That is not a reason to treat a garment like an object behind glass. It is a reason to let it become familiar: the layer you reach for when the weather turns, the bag that comes with you on an ordinary errand, the piece of jewellery that quietly becomes yours.

A good place to start is with one thing.

Wear a kimono over a T-shirt and trousers. Add earrings to the jewellery you already wear. Take a bag out without building an entire outfit around it. The aim is not to make a statement every time you leave the house. It is simply to make room for the piece in the wardrobe you already have.

The test is not whether a piece belongs somewhere special. It is whether it belongs in the ordinary places you already go: to the office, on a walk through town with a friend, across a table in a café.

The more often you wear it, the less it asks of you. It stops being “the handmade piece” and becomes part of how you get dressed.

This is where longevity begins, not in the promise that a garment will last forever, but in the decision to keep returning to it. To care for it. To notice how it changes with wear, and how it changes what you choose to wear alongside it.

A piece does not need a full look, a special date or an explanation. It can do its job quietly. It can make an everyday outfit feel more like your own.

Wear it on a Wednesday. Wear it to the market, to a friend’s kitchen, to nowhere especially important.

The right occasion may be less rare than we make it. Sometimes it is simply the day you are already having.
